This was something I always wanted to do but never figured out how. Lets say you have a folder full of images and you want to resize them all down to 1024px.
- Fire up Automator (It’s in your Applications Folder)
- Drag your images into the Automator work flow.
- Type “Preview” in the automator search box.
- Select Scale Images and drag to your workflow.
- Enter 1024 as your scaling variable.
- Hit Run!

Your probably been told at some stage, it’s going to take a couple of hours for your DNS change to take effect. It will take some time, as it propagates through the wonderful world of the interwebs.
But your computer also caches DNS records and you can clear them easily. On a Mac you do the following:
When you get to know this command you get to love it. So lets make life easier and alias the command.
Alias? I mean instead of typing the full: dscacheutil -flushcache we can instead just type dnsdump.
First, edit your .bash_profile via
vim /Users/$your_user_name/.bash_profile
Then add the following line:
alias dnsdump=’dscacheutil -flushcache’
Then close terminal and reopen, et voila!

An absolute gem has been released to the world of Ruby on Rails developers. Pow, created by sstephenson is a rails web server that runs on OS X.
Why is it so great? Mainly because you can easily spin up multiple rails sites on your local envoirment so easily.
For example, lets say I have a project called, Blah. All I need to do is run the following:
cd ~/.pow
ln -s /where/ever/my/project/files/are
Done, I can now open http://are.dev/ (The name of your project directory is the whatever.dev)
Very cool
Check out this video for a more in dept explanation of why Pow is an amazing tool.

I’ve started to think about this more and more over the last couple of weeks.
- What gets me out of bed in the morning?
- Are there areas of my job I enjoy more than others? Which ones?
- What is my ideal job?
- What goals do I have?
- Where do I see myself in the not to distant future?
- What at work really makes me happy?
The more I thought about these questions the more I released the following
- Money – Although money is a factor of my working career it has never been the driving factor. In fact it has very little to do with my overall goals in progressing my career at all.
Money’s main purpose is to enable me to achieve my goals.
However, I used money as a gauge. Money was the factor on which I based my success. The more money, or the amount of money I took home determined how successful I was as a whole. This is not the case anymore but it’s still worth mentioning how shallow factors effect your decision making within your career.
- Environment - This was and still is one of the highest factors that affects my appreciation and determination to do great work. If I want to build something, I want to be surrounded with greatness.
I guess it falls back to the principle of playing Tennis. You should never play tennis with someone who is weaker than you. You’ll become weaker yourself.
If I surround myself with beautiful Apple Macs. Wonderfully high resolution monitors. Beautifully designed offices. These all inspire me. They create a playground from which I can really start to build great ideas upon. I can start to shine and get _really_ involved.
If it’s an office, with a cramped desk and a tiny little monitor, I’m going to just want to leave. Every time I sit down there, I’ll find an excuse, coffee, fresh air, stretch the legs. Anything to remove me from that space.
- Building Me – This is probably the biggest factor. I want to build myself into the biggest and best I can possibly be. Retract the corniness here for a second. When I’m 90 years old, farting on every step as I try to climb to the top of my stairs, I want to know that I did great things with my life. I want to know that I really did the best I could.
If I don’t have the money to enable me and the environment to flourish in, something is wrong and I am the only one who can fix it.
If I don’t, I’m not living up to my values.
Over the next few weeks, I’ll show you some of the best companies that I’ve found that offer these possibilities. They don’t just offer them, it’s apart of their core values.
